Ovipositional Host Plant Preference of Sepia officinalis
نویسنده
چکیده
The present study was undertaken to verify ancient data in the literature on ovipositional preference o f the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis for the terrestrial plant Pistacia lentiscus (mastic tree). Adult specimens o f Sepia were placed in basins together with aerial parts not only of P. lentiscus, but also o f Artemisia arborescens, Centaurea alba var. deusta, Quercus ilex and Laurus nobilis. The egg masses deposited on the plants were quantified on a daily basis during the 16 day observation period. By far the largest amounts o f eggs were found attached to the stems and petioles o f P. lentiscus (51.8%), but Q. ilex and A. arborescens also scored high as ovipositional host plants (23.1 and 20.2% respectively). L. nobilis and C. alba var. deusta ranked very low (3.6 and 1.3% respectively). Considering the extremely divergent shape o f the three preferred oviposition substrates, which excludes affinity for a uniform type o f plant, the possibility o f chemical attraction cannot be ruled out.

Experience-based mediation of feeding and oviposition behaviors in the cotton bollworm: Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Experience is well known to affect sensory-guided behaviors in many herbivorous insects. Here, we investigated the effects of natural feeding experiences of Helicoverpa armigera larvae on subsequent preferences of larval approaching and feeding, as well as the effect of host-contacting experiences of mated females on subsequent ovipositional preference. The results show that the extent of exper...

This research was aimed at characterizing the daily rhythms of locomotor activity of cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758), a promising aquaculture species, in a captive environment. Cuttlefish were distributed within two tanks equipped with infrared photocells, allowing the monitoring of locomotor activity continuously from August to February. Results showed a preference of cuttlefish ...
متن کاملThe use of background matching vs. masquerade for camouflage in cuttlefish Sepia officinalis
Cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, commonly use their visually-guided, rapid adaptive camouflage for multiple tactics to avoid detection or recognition by predators. Two common tactics are background matching and resembling an object (masquerade) in the immediate area. This laboratory study investigated whether cuttlefish preferentially camouflage themselves to resemble a three-dimensional (3D) obj...

متن کاملSpatial learning in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis: preference for vertical over horizontal information.
The world is three-dimensional; hence, even surface-bound animals need to learn vertical spatial information. Separate encoding of vertical and horizontal spatial information seems to be the common strategy regardless of the locomotory style of animals. However, a difference seems to exist in the way freely moving species, such as fish, learn and integrate spatial information as opposed to surf...
